Getting the RITA finalist call for Tempting the Knight (there will be exclamation marks)

So I was busy eating my lunch on Friday afternoon, contemplating whether to drive to our local multiplex in the Angel Islington to see Zootopia with my sons and my husband or be a good girl and walk when the phone rang.

'Hi, is that Heidi Rice?' Said a voice in a warm American accent.

'Yes, speaking,' I replied round a mouthful of cheese sandwich, thinking is this what I think it is? No it can't be? Surely they're not doing RITA calls on Good Friday? What's the date again? And anyway I got a RITA call last year I can't possibly have gotten another one!

'Hi Heidi, this is Alyssa Day...' At that point it all becomes a little fuzzy, because I was screaming OMG OMG OMG ALYSSA DAY!! inside my head while trying to swallow down my cheese sandwich and also remember to breathe ...

She mentioned my book Tempting the Knight, part of the Fairy Tales of New York quartet I wrote with Kelly Hunter, Amy Andrews and Lucy King, and said RITA finalist and Contemporary Romance Short at some point too, I'm almost certain... But I was hyperventilating far too hard to actually hear anything , except my babbling about how excited I was (as if she couldn't tell that from the hyperventilating) and how I was eating my lunch (like she needed to know that *facepalms*)... We then proceeded to have a half-way coherent chat (coherent on her end, anyway) about the conference in San Diego, would I be coming, how excited I was (again, sooo not necessary)... And then I put down the phone, and just stood in my kitchen waiting for the news to actually sink in – and hoping I'd remembered to thank her (still not sure about that).

Then I rushed out the door to tell my husband, who was busy cutting  the front hedge with his strimmer. He said something like 'Oh that's cool, maybe it'll be third time lucky... ' And then carried on cutting the hedge. So then I had to shout at him the full import of what had just happened over the sound of the strimmer to the whole  neighbourhood. For goodness sake this was a SUPER BIG DEAL. I'd just been nominated for an Oscar. He nodded, looking a bit puzzled, congratulated me again, said something about Leo DiCaprio and if it was his year, maybe it would be mine and carried on strimming....

I then ran into the front room to tell my two sons - who congratulated me without looking up from the TV then asked if we could take the car to the Angel!!

So far so NOT NEARLY EXCITED ENOUGH... Bloody men! They just didn't GET IT... So then I did what I should have done to start with and texted my best writing mate Abby Green - I cannot repeat the text here as it was a little profane (I swear when I'm excited, a lot, I'm a Londoner, this is how we roll). She congratulated me (properly) and then promised to break my legs if I ever moaned about my writing career again (fair enough). Then I hit Twitter and Facebook, as you do... In the middle of lots of lovely congrats from so many of my writing mates and readers, I got a call from my good mate Scarlet Wilson who sounded as flummoxed as me but more so, because she had just found out she had finaled TWICE in the same category!! .... Go Scarlet!!

By the time I'd calmed down enough to think coherently, we had to make a mad dash to the Angel, and nearly missed the start of the movie. (Zootopia's rather good btw, or at least I think it is, I wasn't exactly capable of being objective, I would probably have been entertained by having the phone book recited to me).

Needless to say, four days later, I am still on a high. And don't plan to come down any time soon. I'm all signed up for the conference in San Diego, I have my flights booked and I am quite simply thrilled to bits to be able to go to RWA16 sporting my RITA FINALIST ribbon and pin.

I have a huge debt of thanks to give romance-writing goddess Jane Porter and the fabulous team at Tule Publishing for letting us write these stories the way we wanted to (and giving me my best cover ever), but most of all I want to thank Kelly, Amy and Lucy.

Amy came up with the original idea of doing sexy modern makeovers of classic Fairy Tales (and then explained to me in words of one syllable what oblique meant when I instantly pooh-poohed the idea! Duh!),  Kelly edited my book brilliantly and Lucy helped me come up with a great family history for my heroine (who was the sister of her Beast of a hero)... But more than that, we wrote The Fairy Tales of New York together, after spending months and two thousand plus emails brain-storming the plots, the characters, their connections, their hopes and dreams and conflicts and their backstories, and liaising on everything from the floor plan of the Irish American pub in Brooklyn where our heroines connect to the design of the uniform they wore at the convent school in Upstate New York where they all met as teenagers... The standard of their stories was so high, they challenged me to make my story the best it could be, they let me use their remarkable characters in my book, and they gave my story added depth and complexity by helping to build a whole wonderful world around all four of our heroines and their heroes. But best of all, they made the whole process an absolute hoot! I wrote all about it on The Pink Heart Society if you want to know more...

TBH it almost feels a little bit greedy to get the pleasure of a RITA nod on top of all that Fairy Tale goodness... But hey, I'm all for being the princess in my own modern day fairy tale, especially if it means I can now go shop for a new posh frock to wear at the Awards do!

Tempting the Knight Release Day and Important Blog Roll!!

YAY!! Doing little snoopy dance today with the release of Tempting the Knight.

Here's the blurb:

Once upon a time, poor little rich girl Zelda Madison wanted someone to love her, until she discovered being a badass was much more fun.

Ten years after getting kicked out of convent school and torn away from her three best friends, Zelda has worked hard to clean up her act, but after a midnight swim on Manhattan Beach, she’s suddenly in urgent need of a knight in shining armor…

Hard-working legal aid attorney Tyrone Sullivan is the last guy she should call. Not only does he hold a grudge when it comes to Zelda leading his little sister astray all those years ago, he’s also supremely pissed about having to rescue a runaway supermodel from a Brooklyn police station at two am. But when Ty reluctantly agrees to bust Zel out of her ivory tower and let her hide out on his house barge for a few days, she shows him the wild side he didn’t know he had.

Zel discovers there’s nothing hotter than tarnishing a good guy’s armor… Until he starts to steal her bad girl’s battered heart…

My novella is out NOW as a stand-alone story and it's only 99c.. Come on, you know you deserve it.

Here's the blurb:

Unlucky-in-love PR manager Kate Braithwaite doesn’t think her Christmas could get any suckier. Until a trip into work on Christmas Day leaves her snowbound in the Fifth Avenue department store with her boss’s far-too-tempting playboy son Ryder Sinclair. Ryder’s rugged, reckless and none too pleased to be stuck in a place he hates with an uptight workaholic like Kate—but as the night draws on, the lights go out and the temperature rises, until they’re both wondering is this the season to get lucky?

And here's an awesome male torso... Sorry, I meant to say here's the sexy new cover!

Many thanks are due to my fellow flirtettes - Kate Hardy, Aimee Carson and Amy Andrews - Abby Green for her naughty cover quote and that cover model's personal trainer.

The KISS Continuity Is Ready for Takeoff!

So excited to announce that my 14th book has now been accepted!

Maid Of Dishonour is currently slated for a September release in North America and will be the third book in the KISS continuity which I've been doing with fabulous fellow authors Amy Andrews, Aimee Carlson and Kimberly Lang. Called The Wedding Season, the continuity follows the story of four former college roomies who each end up on the rocky road to love during one eventful summer.

My story involves flirty British social media strategist living in New York Gina Carrington and hot Southern CEO Carter Price (who's the big brother of Kimberly Lang's heroine). They have a wild one-night stand in their past that had a devastating impact on both their lives and gives them lots of juicy baggage to work through when they meet again ten years later.

Having now read all the other books in the continuity I can safely say that it's  going to be an absolute stunner. It should be kicking off in July with Aimee Carson's book The Uninvited Wedding Guest which is a suitably steamy tale of love regained when Park Avenue Princess Reese Michaels has a surprise visit from surly ex-husband and former US Marine, Mason Hicks, on the eve of her big society wedding to Mr Perfect, Dylan Brookes......

Hope that whets everyone's appetite!

I'll be sticking up a sneak peek on my website of Maid Of Dishonour as soon as I have cover art, but until that time you might want to check out my Pinterest page featuring my pictorial inspiration for the story accompanied by some cheeky little snippets of the text!

Also today, I'm talking about the fabulousness that is the Silver Linings Playbook over at The Pink   Heart Society  so come on over and check it out.

Heidi Rice & Amy Andrews: Entangled Under the Mistletoe Blog Hop!

Amy and I welcome you to our stop on the Entangled Under the Mistletoe Blog Hop... Yay!

We'll be giving away a copy of our gorgeous Festive anthology Baby It's Cold Outside (check out that chest, ladies!) so don't forget to click on the Rafflecopter below to enter.

Psst: Our fellow anthologists Kate Hardy and Aimee Carson are appearing at Kate's blog as part of the Hop with another prize to win!

Here are two tantalising tastettes from our two stories to get you in the mood to win a copy - or maybe just in the mood for some hot Christmas lovin'...

Tis the Season to Love Shopping

by Heidi Rice

When a Christmas Day blizzard strands an up-and-coming marketing manager Katherine Braithwaite and Ryder Sinclair, her boss's very off-limits, very hot playboy son, in Sinclair's luxury Fifth Avenue department store overnight, the two toe the line between naughty and nice as they unwrap their holiday presents—and each other!

And here's the tasty tastette - when Ryder and Kate have just discovered they are going to be stuck together alone in the store overnight...

“We should head up to the electrical department first for a couple of flashlights," Ryder began. "So we’re all set if the generator goes again.” He led her toward the stairwell. “Then we need to find you some dry clothes.” He glanced down at her attire. “Unless of course you want to wear the lap-dancing elf outfit again. I certainly wouldn’t object.”

“I’m not putting that on again,” she said, so relieved at the change of topic she felt almost giddy. “I looked ridiculous.”

Giddy relief turned to giddy shock when his arm tightened and he murmured, “Katherine, you did not look ridiculous. You looked seriously hot.” The blush shot up her neck and set fire to her ears. “But if you’re dead-set against giving me any more cheap thrills,” he added, apparently oblivious to her embarrassment, “which I personally think is a little small of you, then I suggest we check out the lingerie department and find a compromise we can both live with as a fallback position.”

“Um...” She stammered, her wits having completely deserted her. Was he flirting with her? And if he was, why was it making the giddy shock turn into a giddy thrill? “I’m not sure that’s appropriate...” She continued trying to find her indignation. Or at least a tiny iota of her usually very reliable common sense.

“Katherine, we’re stranded in the middle of a major weather event here. Forget appropriate. The only benefit to a situation like this is that appropriate no longer applies.”

Over to you Amy:

‘Tis the Season for Kissing

by Amy Andrews

Down-on-her-romantic-luck kindergarten teacher Tamara plans to drown her New Year’s Eve sorrows in a gallon of spiked eggnog, but the arrival of her best friend's sexy brother Luke Jackson threatens to melt the snow piling up outside the tiny Vermont cabin.

After almost bashing Luke over the head with a golf stick, then stripping off most of her clothes in a cluelessly drunken striptease because she was hot, Tamara goes on to regale Luke with the hopeless state of her love life:

Luke chose his words carefully, taking a pull of his beer before he said anything. She might have been intoxicated but this angst was obviously coming from somewhere. “So...this ban on casual sex includes kissing?”

She nodded vigorously and Luke was left in no doubt that kissing was off the table. Damn.

“Most definitely,” she added for extra emphasis. “It’s like a gateway drug.”

“A gateway drug?”

She looked directly at him and somehow, sitting in her long johns with no bra, possibly no underwear, and high on eggnog, she still managed to look just like a kindergarten teacher.

“I don’t have good impulse control. Not when it comes to kissing anyway. I like kissing. Hell,” she bugged her eyes at him, “I love kissing. It’s addictive.”

She held his gaze and Luke was captured by the earnestness he saw in hers. “You know those deep, wet, hungry kisses with plenty of tongue and a lot of groaning that taste like cotton candy laced with cocaine and reek of anticipation that can go on for hours until you can barely breathe and every cell feels alive? Just kissing and kissing and kissing like it’s never going to end?”

When she shut her eyes and sighed with her mouth slightly parted, Luke swallowed. Hard. Hell yeah, he remembered those kisses.

She turned her troubled gray gaze to the fire. “But then I want more. I want to feel his hands all over my body. I want to be naked. I want to be horizontal. Or not,” she shrugged. “It depends. And I don’t want to leave until I know all of his kinks and erogenous zones and he knows that I like it when he talks dirty to me as I’m about to come and we’re lying in an exhausted heap barely able to breathe.”

Luke didn’t say anything as she stared into the fire. Her voice had become husky and he could hear a hitch in her breathing. Her admissions sent all the blood rushing from his head and other areas of his body straight to his dick. There was none left for his vocal cords, which seemed to have gone into some weird kind of paralysis.

She sighed and looked at him. “Gateway drug.”

He cleared his throat. “Right,” he said and hoped it came out a lot more manly than it sounded.

Has that whetted your apetite? I thought so. To enter the giveaway and be in with a chance of winning a copy, click the Rafflecopter link below! And Good Luck.

The Riva Re-Launch Covers!

So have finally gotten ahold of my sample cover for the Riva Re-Launch which will be coming to a WH Smith's store near you in October (if you live in the UK that is!)

Tell me what you think? I like the fun, flirtatious style. It's a daring departure from the Series look of other Mills and Boon books but I think these new covers are going to stand out a mile on the M&B rack. I think it's a bit of a shame that this is a previously released book, but as the intention with these sample titles is to see if they can attract new readers to the brand, it makes sense. And in the 15 books on offer online and in stores there are some new titles (just not mine!)

Hopefully the new design will be a roaring success and we'll be back in stores with all new editorial in early 2013.... Fingers crossed.

In other news, I am having an absolute ball working on my first ever continuity with fellow Kiss authors Kimberly Lang, Aimee Carson and Amy Andrews... We were simply given a theme and we've worked something amazing out from there. Last night I had an hour-long Skype chat with Ms Lang in Alabama to sort out the backstory for our respective books (as my delicious Southern hero is her heroine's brother we needed to trash out their family background). Have to admit I was quite wary of getting involved in this project to start with, the thought of writing books with other writers characters in was daunting. But the brainstorming process with a group of such smart and talented women has been an absolute hoot... And now I've discovered Skype I may never talk to anyone without it ever again.

Kiss news and Chris Hemsworth in Leather Trousers...

So, I'm sure you've all heard by now the very exciting news that the Riva imprint will be launching in the US as Kiss in early 2013... That said, you'll need to look out for One Night So Pregnant, my next (and last) Presents Extra book in December in the US. Unfortunately in the UK it's got caught in the Riva relaunch so it'll be going out Direct to Consumer only in November, and hopefully get a full print and digital release when Riva relaunches in 2013... Will keep you posted on that.

One Night, So Pregnant is Tess and Nate's story - you remember Tess, best mate of The Good, the Bad and the Wild's heroine Eva Redmond, yeah, that's right, that Tess the tall, slim party planner with the big mouth... Quite a few peeps asked for her story and I couldn't resist. Anyway, I'll be posting more news about the book with excerpts, etc as soon as I have a cover. (That's Nate on the left! Phwoar!)

Now the book I'm currently working on is Zane and Iona's story. Zane is a drop-dead gorgeous Mexican-American private detective who runs his own agency in Carmel California and is the secret half-brother of Nate... You'll meet him in One Night and believe me, as soon as you do you'll wanna read his story. Well, I certainly had to write it. Anyhow I'm still plugging away at it. Fingers crossed it will be out in the new Kiss line next year and hopefully the brand spanking new Riva line too (if it gets accepted!)...  That's Zane and Iona doing something a little bit naughty on the right!

For more details about both books, check out my Coming Soon page.

But equally exciting is the very cool continuity I've just started brainstorming with fellow Riva Divas Amy Andrews, Aimee Carson and Kimberly Lang. So far we've been having a hoot pinging emails between the US, Oz and London and while the results of our labours are all hush-hush for now I can tell you that what we've worked out so far is TOTALLY AWESOME. This is gonna be a continuity to die for. Can't wait to get to RWA conference next week in Los Angeles and start brainstorming face to face with Miss Carson and Miss Lang... I've never done a continuity before so it's virgin territory for me (and there aren't many things I can say that about these days!) and I'm loving it...

In other news, I'm over at the Pink Heart Society today waxing lyrical about Snow White and the Huntsman or rather the  Chris Hemsworth and the Leather Trousers as it is now affectionately known by moi! So come and join me and have your say.
