A Quickie

Just a super-quickie to say I'm blogging on the PHS on Friday 24th July about Movies to Watch Out For over the next year. I have Hugh action, McDreamy and McSteamy in the same film and a touch of Vampire spotting in Twilight: New Moon, so pop over there and post a darn comment. Yes, I know I originally said on this very blog it would be Friday 17th but I got my dates mixed up! Quelle suprise! But hey, at least I got my blog done early for once.

Will be back here soon to talk about First Chapters and a few of the tricks I've learned about how to write them... Or maybe that's a few of the tricks I've learned about how not to write them.

Either way, it'll be valueable advice, when I figure out what it is...

Get Ye to the Pink Heart Society...Or Movietalk

Just another quickie to say get thee to the Pink Heart Society on Friday or What's on TV's Movietalk blog where I will be waxing lyrical about the new Hugh Jackman/Nicole Kidman romantic epic Australia.

Is it the ultimate guilty pleasure movie? Quite possibly.

Also had some fab news from fellow Mod Hotter Kate Hardy to say she's up for the RNA Romance Prize again this year. Now, as she won it last year with Breakfast at Giovanni's I'm thinking Wow!! And my Modern mate India Grey is also up for the award, so hopefully they'll be lots of reasons to celebrate come February 10th when they announce the winner at the RNA luncheon. That's certainly shaping up to be a shindig and a half.

Am still plugging away at the current ms, which has turned into the stream-of-consciousness romance novel from Hell. Still sticking to my motto though, through gritted teeth: Write, write, write, edit crap at later date.

I'm starting to think though that slash and burn might be the best technique for the editing stage...

Oh and don't forget to vote for eharlequin as the best blog in the history of the known universe (or something like that) at the webblog awards.

Happy New Year from London Town

Just wanted to pop in and wish everyone a fabulous 2009.

Popped into the West End last night to celebrate New Year's Eve. So we went for a Chinese in Chinatown, a quick visit to the funfair on Leicester Square and a movie with Jim Carrey called Yes Man (not fantastic, but did have a few laugh-out-loud moments, one of which I'm still chuckling about now!!). We had toyed with the idea of seeing the fireworks, but my God, it was absolutely freezing, so we totally chickened out and got a bus home to watch them in the comfort of our living room with a lovely fire in the hearth. I know, utterly unadventurous, but at least I still have all my fingers and toes this morning.

And my Christmas pressie to myself this year was a trip to the cinema on Boxing Day to see the eagerly awaited (by me anyway) Australia with Hugh Jackman.

Now, I have to be totally honest here and say this is not Baz Lurhmann's best movie (and I really thought it would be, plus that guy can pretty much do no wrong in my eyes) but did it deserve the absolutely atrocious reviews it has been given?? No sirree. I mean just for the scene in which the gorgeous Hugh is stripped to the waist soaping himself by an Outback campfire I'd give it a glowing review. Not that I'm bias or menopausal or anything! And quite apart from Hugh and his magnificent abs there were some other really moving moments, glowing cinematography, drama, excitement, romance - and an amazing performance from an unknown (and beautiful) Aboriginal boy who plays the narrator.

Still I'll be giving you'all the full low-down on the PHS on January 9th for their Must See Friday. And pointing out all those must-see moments involving Hugh - and Nicole Kidman, of course, who I think might also have been in it. I'm sure I spotted her there somewhere....

And as for my current ms? Going great guns... Not always in the right direction mind you ( I wrote a whole bloody chapter set in the Eurotunnel Terminal - hmmm, really glamourous and aspirational that!). But I'm sticking to my current motto, which is: 'Write Every Day And Remember: As Long As You Know It's Crap You Can Correct It Later.'

We Write Romance Blog

Hey all,

Just a quick note to say I'll be blogging on the fabulous  We Write Romance blog this Tuesday as part of their Presents Month.

My waffle topic? The fascinating subject of turning bad boys into Alpha men. So here's a few piccies of my favourite bad boys both past and present to inspire you on the subject before you pop on over there. Oh alright, I admit it, this was just a good excuse to post some prime tottie on my blog. But frankly, any excuse is a good one, right!

Good news... of the WIP AND Hugh Jackman variety.

So, had a fabulous chat with my editor on Thursday morning. And she lurved the new WIP! Hallelujah!

Frankly, this was the make or break manuscript for me. Because I sweated buckets over it before I sent it in. After the nightmare that was the last two books, I tried to look for all those tell-tale signs of trouble this time around - you know, little giveaways like a complete lack of conflict between my H and h, or long conversations in which they bicker but get nowhere, or avoidance techniques such as endless descriptive passages or overdeveloped secondary characters... and this time I thought I'd caught them all... So to find out I mostly had was a huge, huge relief. Also good to know that after all the pain of the last two books, I've finally got some gain out of it. That said I'm not going to get cocky and think I won't make the same mistakes again. I've begun to accept that blind alleys and wrong turns are all part and parcel of my writing technique (seems there's no such thing as a Tom-Tom in my writer's life, more's the pity). But I can improve my chances of not going up too many of those blind alleys by writing a plot outline to avoid any major plot black holes (before I spend pages falling into them) and then I just have to watch for those telltale signs again, so my editor doesn't have to do it for me.

Me and my editor also had a very productive chat about book six, which is going to be a linked book to my latest WIP. All I'm saying is another Irish Bad Boy is in the offing. I'll be letting you know the outcome of that when I've got the 'little tweaks' done on this one.

Okay, now on to my other good news... And the excuse for that gorgeous picture of Hugh and Nicole in period dress. Actually it's more like mega exciting news. Went to the cinema on Saturday to watch a chick flick called The Women with my oldest son (I know, bless him!) which isn't nearly as chronic as the critics will have you think (is it just me with my feminist hat on, or are male film critics hard wired to hate chick flicks?) but even so the highlight of the afternoon came before the main feature when they screened the trailer for Baz Lurhmann's new film Australia.

We're talking three minutes of pure bliss ladies. Hugh in his cowboy dudes, Hugh in a dinner suit, Hugh just looking generally gorgeous and rumpled and sweaty and sexy - and Nicole Kidman to complement him all pure and beautiful and feisty. This film is gonna be awesome... And not just for the Hugh factor. Anyone see Strictly Ballroom? Moulin Rouge? In my opinion Baz Luhrmann is bringing epic romance in it's purest form back to cinemas. And let's face it we can all do with a bit more romance in our lives... Not to mention Hugh Jackman on a horse with added stubble (Hugh that is, not the horse!)...

I'm working at IPC magazines again next week and hoping to do a blog on this film on Whats on TV's film blog, will keep you posted on that if I manage to pull it off...

The PHS Hugh Jackman Tour 2008

Okay, the Pink Heart Society's Two today and what more excuse do I need to post a picture of Hugh Jackman on my blog? None at all naturally.

So Happy Birthday PHS. And I'm going to be having a big glass of vino tonight with chocolate accompaniment, because not only is there a birthday to celebrate, but I've finally finished my latest MS. Yipp-a-dee-do-dah! It's taken me to hell and back, but I think it's pretty darn good. Now all I've got to do is hope like hell my ed feels the same way.

Oh and cos I'm in such a good mood, I've also stuck a photo in of my current favourite squeeze, John Hamm from Mad Men, because I'm greedy like that.
