Chamar todos oradores portugueses! My First Brazilian Goodreads Giveaway!

Got a lovely little package in the post this morning from my samba-ing postman...

So to celebrate I'm doing my first Brazilian Goodreads Giveaway (seems appropriate as the Football World Cup is gonna be in Rio next year!). The giveaway book is a gorgeous 2-in-1 of The Mile High Club and The Tycoon's Very Personal Assistant (in Portuguese of course!), which I think is coming out in November/December in time for Christmas!

Should be approved in a couple of days and then anyone can enter (so watch this blog!)...

In other news the lovely Abby Green told me that Too Close for Comfort hit the top spot on the Harlequin website today... So I'm posting a screen grab... Because I'm a bit of a show off like that (and it'll probably only be up there for a nano-second!)

Islington Workshop & Book Comp for The Mile High Club!

Hey all...

Hope you had a wonderful sunny weekend. It was a bank holiday here in the UK so my DH and I decided to decorate our front room. One of those daft decisions that you totally regret when you're knee deep in paint, and dust, and general decorating crap and it's blazing sunshine outside... Oh well, now it's all ready for the next Bank Holiday at the end of May (when it better not be raining).

Now I have news. I'm going to be at Islington Central Library tomorrow evening doing a writing workshop as part of Islington's Word2013 Festival.

Here are the details:

Alpha Hero to Contemporary Heroine:
Writing Contemporary Romantic Fiction for Mills & Boon
by Author Heidi Rice
at
Islington Central Library
Address: 2 Fieldway Crescent, London N5 1PF
Phone: 020 7527 6900
Wednesday 8th May
6pm-8pm

You need to ring the library to book a space, but it's completely free and I will have free books to give away to attendees.

I also got a rather cool package in the post last week with a brand new Riva-branded copy of my 2007 story The Mile High Club, which has been out of print now for a number of years and is only being made available to subscribers in the UK...

This story is very dear to my heart, it was only my second book, has settings in London, Paris and New York (my three favourite cities) and has as its heroine a young journalist on a London listings magazine (yes, that would be my first proper job) and the hero is an enigmatic American crime novelist. Plus the book got a RITA nomination!!

Anyway, I have one spare copy to give away... So if you want to be in with a chance to win you need to enter the Rafflecopter below:

The Mile High Club goes Greek... And other inspirations.

Found out today about Harlequin's new Greek website so of course I could not resist browsing it to discover if any of my books are available. And lo and behold I found The Mile High Club coming out as a Desire in Greek! At least I'm assuming it's that book, my Greek not being all that fluent.

Just check out that fabulously sexy and romantic cover art — Mel and Jack exactly as they appear in the book snogging on the balcony of his bijoux Parisian residence with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Honestly I think it's the best book cover I've ever had. I absolutely adore it.

I also stuck the title and blurb into a Greek Translator and discovered it's been retitled A Kiss for Christmas - which may not be quite as sexy as the original title, but is very cute nonetheless and as the story's set over Christmas and New Year also surprisingly appropriate.

It's moments like this that make the whole process worth all the effort. In fact, I was so excited by the discovery, I've just written the first four pages of my next story, all complete tripe of course, but the enthusiasm's back which is all that matters at this stage.

And just in case you were wondering, my hero's a Brit this time around (a little bit bad boy, a lot sexy billionaire) just to be on the safe side for a change. And my hero inspiration (in the looks department mostly) is coming from a male model called David Gandy who I read an interview with in last week's Observer Woman magazine. Models don't usually do it for me - too much style over substance I guess - but Gandy does take a very good picture (if you've seen those Dolce and Gabana ads that's him) and more importantly he comes across as a nice guy in the article (journalist Polly Vernon certainly seemed to take a shine to him anyway), which is pretty crucial when you're looking for hero inspiration I always think.

More Good News... Of the RITA variety.

What better way to lift the gloom of rewrites than the call I got from that nice lady at the RWA this afternoon. She told me that my second Modern Heat The Mile High Club (aka The Millionaire's Blackmail Bargain in its Presents incarnation) has Finalled in the RITAs (the Contemporary Series Romance Category). What a thrill. Had to go on line straight away and register for the Conference in Frisco in July - now all I have to do is dig up the airfare from somewhere and buy a great frock.

Also heard from a certain little bird that there's another Modern Heat author in there but I'm sworn to secrecy about who it is until the list comes out tomorrow.

Whoopee! Modern Heat is taking over the world.

My Valentine's Treasure Hunt Clue... A bit early.

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm so excited I couldn't wait and decided to post my Treasure Hunt clue a few hours early. But then again, it's probably the 19th now in Oz, so it's not too early at all. There, justification done.

Firstly, in case you don't already know, the Sensational Romance Blog is running a Valentine's Treasure Hunt this month with a fabulous job lot of great Modern Heat romances to be won. All you have to do is go to the different author blogs where the clues are posted, jot down the answers to one simple question, and then send them all in an email to our webmistress Ally Blake at win@allyblake.com by 28th Feb. The winner will be announced on the Sensational Romance blog on 29th. Don't forget you need all the answers to win the prize. A list of the difference authors and the books they're giving away is on the Blog too.

I'll be giving away a copy of my second Modern Heat/Sexy Sensation book The Mile High Club, which got a four star review from Romantic Times (under its US title The Millionaire's Blackmail Bargain) and won a Cataromance Reviewers Choice Award earlier this year. So it's not half bad, if I do say so myself.

I'm going to post two short excerpts from the first chapter and then ask an easy peasy question underneath. So here goes.... (Drum roll please).

Carmel Rourke strained to hear the footsteps in the bedroom next door, crouched against the cold enamel of the bath and tried not to breath. Now, if she could just stop her heartbeat sounding like the canon fire finale from the 1812 Overture, she might be able to avoid spending Christmas in a prison cell.

How had she ended up hiding in The Ritz hotel bathroom of a complete stranger?

Mel fisted her hands to stop them trembling and sunk down further into the bathtub as the bathroom light flashed on. A dark shape crossed in front of the gauzy layers of shower curtain.
He looked enormous.

But at least he was whistling. Maybe he wouldn’t mind when he found a mad woman hiding in his bathroom? She swallowed and prayed her stomach wouldn’t grumble. The fear and the hours she’d spent in confinement were making her head start to spin. Running water sounded and then the whistling stopped. Was that the hum of an electric shaver?

Mel tried to inch upright without putting her head too far over the lip of the bath. She needed to be ready to put her plan -- pathetic as it was -- into action. The humming stopped and the whistling started again. Then came the deafening crackle of a zipper and the thud of something hitting the floor. Mel felt her heart jump into her throat and had to suppress the yelp when a tanned, muscled forearm sprinkled with dark hair appeared above her and grasped the shower control.

Two quick twists and a deluge of cold water shot out of the showerhead. Mel squealed as the icy spray hit her full in the face.

‘What the…’

The shower curtain whipped back and towering over her was the hunk -- without a stitch on. A sprinkling of dark hair defined the contours of a hard muscled chest and arrowed down to his groin. Mel’s blood pressure shot up to boiling point as her eyes followed the arrow down completely of there own accord. Through the deluge of warming water, she saw something she knew she’d never forget as long as she lived. Her gaze rocketed back up to his face so fast it was a wonder she didn’t get whiplash. Piercing blue eyes glared at her, accusingly. But he made no move to cover himself.

Mel pushed the dripping hair off her forehead, her hand shaking so hard she thought she might be having a stroke.

‘What the hell are you doing in my bathroom?’ he shouted.

Okay, that's it, now my question is...

What's the name of the hotel where Mel is hiding from her hunky stranger?

See, I told you it was dead easy.

Right now once you've got that, you need to head on over to Nicola Marsh's blog for 21st Feb where the next clue will be posted. And if you've missed any of the other clues along the way just go back to the Sensational blog and check them out again before the 28th.

Good luck.

Good news week!

Got an email a couple of days ago from Donna at CataRomance to say that The Mile High Club has won a Reviewers Choice Award. I was so chuffed, especially when I checked out the full list and found fellow Modern Heat authors Nicola Marsh, Trish Wylie, Ally Blake and Sue Stephens there as well. You can check out the full list by clicking here.

Then I heard via the grapevine not one but two of my Modern Heat colleagues - namely Julie Cohen and Kate Hardy - have been nominated for RNA's much coveted Romance Prize this year. And I've got to mention Romance author Fiona Harper (who very nicely came up to chat to me last year at the RNA lunch so I consider her a friend) and who has been nominated twice (isn't that a bit greedy Fiona?). I'll be rooting for all of them come Feb 4th (if I can get a late ticket for the Awards Lunch at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, which I, of course, forgot to book! Duh!). For the full list of nominees click here.

And then to really make my week I got an email from my editor Bryony to say that Bedded by a Playboy got into the Waldenbooks Top Ten Bestsellers in series romance for the week ending 12th January and here's the proof. Yippee. I'm a happy camper. So happy in fact that I will admit to falling off the wagon ever so slightly last night. Luckily I didn't hit the ground too hard.

As my reward tonight I'm off to see No Country for Old Men, the new Coen Brothers movie. Anyone seen O Brother Where Art Thou? George Clooney in a hairnet - now that's what I call a movie. I'm expecting to be thoroughly entertained. And I'm expecting to tell y'all about it at a future date - unless it turns out to be rubbish, in which case I won't.
